There’s a lot to love about Michael Bernard Fitzgerald (MBF). His sweet, approachable dispo-sition gives way to an undeniable confidence onstage. He is a man who can break hearts play-ing solo with an acoustic guitar and loop pedal, and in equal measure, make venues soar with full backing bands, choirs and dancers. From his spontaneous live show song-sampling that name checks the likes of Alanis, TLC, Ke$ha and Flo-rida, right down to his trademark canvas kicks, MBF personifies his music: optimistic, uplifting, honest, daring and full of love.

Tickets for his March Edmonton show go on sale on December 16th! More info HERE

*We featured his song "Care for you".

T. Buckley (nee Tim Buckley) is a roots artist in the true sense of the word, combining stylings of Country, Folk and Rock'n'Roll. Buckley and bassist, Derek Pulliam, silence a crowd with powerful harmonies. They can take hold of a young audience with edgy roots-rock and captivate traditional music lovers with timeless melodies. T. Buckley has been honing his craft for several years and in that time has played over 250 shows, both solo and with side project, Buck&Jess, and has shared the stage with a broad range of artists including Catherine MacLellan, Old Man Luedecke and Carolyn Mark. 2010 was a great year for T. Buckley. He was recognized as one of seven of Calgary's emerging best new artists by FFWD Weekly, and was honoured by winning the 2010 Calgary Folk Festival Songwriting Contest, earning him a performance at the Calgary Folk Festival and the Calgary Folk Club. Perhaps the most notable of his accomplishments was when he was awarded a10K20 recording grant from RAWLCO Radio in June 2010. With help from the RAWLCO grant, Buckley has released an exciting new record, Roll On. Immediately recognized on CKUA Radio’s Top Music Charts, the recording features a wonderfully diverse set of songs ranging in style from Traditional Country to Roots Rock. Roll On is quickly gaining the attention of roots music lovers throughout Western Canada, as BEATROUTE Magazine’s critic, Sebastian Buzzalino, recently wrote, "2010 may very well be the year in which the dam bursts and the rest of Calgary – let alone western Canada and beyond – fall in love with this singer-songwriter talent.”

Darren Frank is a singer, songwriter, musician and human who makes multiform grownup pop music. Encompassing a wide range of styles, his songs are bursting with melodies that linger, hooks that stick, grinding riffs, coordinated rhythms, and words that sing about (among other things) the polarities of life.

In 2008, he put some of these songs on his Coal To Diamond EP, an eclectic and engaging affair which received some nice reviews and put Frank on the radar.

March 2010 will see the release of his first full length album entitled That Lived-In Look. Recorded at the Physics Lab with engineer/producer Terry Paholek, this bold and diverse new project offers Frank's inevitable next step towards making more music.

Originally from Manitoba, and now based in Alberta, Raphaël Freynet is part of a young generation of Western Canadian artists who, over the past few years, have been emerging onto the Francophone scene. An accomplished pianist and guitarist, Raphaël has developed his own brand of intoxicating indie pop-rock. His exquisite melodies and Brit-rock-tinged voice project a compelling mix of boldness and reverie. Raphaël’s first album, Le monde à voir, is composed of ten original songs - two of which are in english - written around the themes of the journeys that we need to take, and the roots that tie us back to the places we call home.
Raphaël has certainly been seeing the world in 2010. In March, he travelled to Mexico City with NON NON NON to represent Alberta at the Rostros de la francophonia and the prestigious Festival de Mexico. He played a show with Les Rencontres qui chantent at the Vue sur la relève festival in Montreal, and in November 2010, he participated in Le Grand 8, which toured in Quebec and in France. His new album recently WON for Best Francophone Recording at the 2011 Western Canadian Music Awards.

Grant MacEwan University presents Xanadu
October 21 - 29 in the John L. Haar Theatre
Tickets available through Tix on the Square
A hilarious, roller skating musical adventure. It’s the eighties. Nine muses from the heavens of Mount Olympus spring to life from a Venice Beach art mural depicting 'Ancient Greek arty chicks.' The painter is Sonny, a frustrated artist whose dream is to open a roller disco nightclub called Xanadu.
Xanadu is a goofy, wry riff on art and creativity, bad movies and vacuous stage musicals. It lampoons the wretchedness of '80s pop culture, while simultaneously celebrating the musical pop rock 'cheese' of that era with an insidiously catchy hit score composed by Jeff Lynne of Electric Light Orchestra.

  • Bardic Form on the Shell Theatre's Fort Radio U22 Productions Intermission Stage for Rik Emmett's show on October 28.
Hunger Hush is a band that reaches. The four friends that make up the Calgary, AB based outfit draw from their varied musical backgrounds to grasp at the energy found in their own favourite artists. A careful listener can hear the earthy rock of Attack in Black and the blues-tinged echoes of Warren Zevon – all filtered through ringing keys and driving guitars; trumpet blasts and daring bass lines.
On April 7, 2011, Hunger Hush released their self-titled debut album to a sold-out crowd at Calgary’s Broken City. The album was recorded and produced by Alberta notable Lorrie Matheson in his Arch Audio studios, and the six original songs provide a compelling snapshot of a growing artist with an already distinct voice.
Hunger Hush has enjoyed praise for their live performances, and the band has a dedicated following that is constantly growing. They’ve shared the stage with Daniel Wesley, Hot Panda, The Autumn Portrait and The Magnetic North, among others. Hunger Hush has received local radio attention on CJSW, performed in venues across Alberta, and plans to tour in the fall of 2011.

The real Prairie Belle....

Hello podcast family.

We are really excited to announce the release of Lisa's new record, Prairie Belle. When we started the podcast we struggled to find a name that we thought truly embodied the two of us and our love for the prairies and the arts. At the time, Lisa's song Prairie Belle was written but not recorded yet. Both of us identified with the song and decided to name the podcast after the song. Nearly two years later, Lisa has finally released the record. We are proud to share the name, but want people to know that the song was our original inspiration to name the podcast. Celebrate with us and go visit Lisa's brand new website and have a listen to the title track!

Thank you again for your continuous support of the podcast, and the local arts!

Cheers!
Lisa & Daneel
